this too is a second floor porch (as is mine, i would only shade half with a roof structure over it) and is situated just like mine will be on the back of the house.... i like the california feel and the spacing of the horizontal railing panels. they afford a tad bit more privacy. as do the seasonal greenery.

this railing might actually achieve a farm house/ expansive property feel for a space that in reality, is quite small. it would aslo allow lots of sun for growing plants.

As for adjustable privacy.... outdoor material curtains?

i wish these rolled from the bottom UP so you could let some sun in from the top, peek your nose over to see down but so that folks couldn't see what you were, or were not wearing from the neck down, yeah?

i like the fact that a wire railing allows for maximum sun exposure for plant growth but there is no accounting for privacy... boo.

this is shigeru ban's deck curtain house in tokyo! so open, light and privacy optional.

ok, so, i'm looking for cool deck designs. i've found a few so far...
